Credentials
Surgical Assistant - Certified (SA-C) is a nationally recognized credential issued by the American Board of Surgical Assistants (ABSA) that verifies a surgical assistant has met formal education, clinical experience, and examination standards. An SA-C works directly alongside the surgeon in the operating room, helping expose anatomy, control bleeding, handle tissue, and maintain operative flow so procedures can be performed safely and efficiently. This role is critical because it allows surgeons to focus on decision-making and technique while ensuring continuity, precision, and patient safety throughout the operation.
Surgical Technologist - Certified (TS-C) is a nationally recognized credential issued by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), confirming competency in sterile technique, instrumentation, case preparation, and intraoperative workflow. For a surgical assistant, holding the TS-C matters because it reflects a deep foundation in operating room fundamentals, from maintaining the sterile field to anticipating surgical needs, which directly supports smoother cases and safer outcomes. This background strengthens an assistant’s ability to integrate seamlessly with surgeons and OR teams, bringing both technical precision and operational reliability to every procedure.

Physician Assistants are clinically trained to diagnose, treat, and manage patient care in many settings, but their surgical experience comes mostly from clinical rotations and general medical training rather than dedicated operating room practice. A Surgical Assistant, by contrast, trains specifically for the OR, spends thousands of hours in actual surgical settings learning exposure, retraction, hemostasis, and intraoperative workflow from day one, and holds certification focused entirely on assisting the surgeon safely and efficiently. Because of this focused education and real-world OR experience, Surgical Assistants are typically far more familiar with surgeon preferences, sterile technique, and procedural consistency than a PA whose training is much broader and not centered on surgical assisting.

I provide surgical assisting services on both a per-diem basis and through block schedule coverage. Compensation can be arranged directly with the practice, or I can bill the patient’s insurance when applicable, depending on case type and facility requirements.
-
am available nationwide, depending on scheduling. My primary focus is the DC and Baltimore region, and I regularly travel to Western Pennsylvania near Pittsburgh and Cleveland. Because I also work travel assignments, I am accustomed to block schedules such as three 12-hour shifts or four 10-hour shifts. This is unconventional for many assistants, but normal for me, which allows me to support practices anywhere when longer coverage blocks are needed. This is a more affordable option than hiring through a Travel Staffing agency.
-
I support multiple surgical specialties, with a focus on private practice environments. These commonly include orthopedics, general surgery, plastics, podiatry, robotic-assisted procedures, urology, along with additional services depending on facility needs and case mix.
-
Both. I regularly work with private practices, ambulatory surgery centers, and hospitals. Many of my engagements come directly through surgeon offices rather than hospital staffing departments.
-
Yes. I understand that coverage gaps happen due to vacations, illness, or scheduling changes. When available, I can step in for short-term or urgent coverage, including single-day cases or multi-day blocks.
-
Credentialing requirements vary by facility. I provide all standard documentation, certifications, and background materials needed to complete onboarding. I am experienced with multi-facility credentialing and aim to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.
-
Yes. In addition to local per-diem work, I accept block schedule and travel assignments. This allows practices outside my primary region to receive consistent coverage, whether that is weekly blocks or multi-week engagements.
-
I work directly with surgeons and practices rather than through large staffing agencies. This allows for clearer communication, consistent coverage, and a more personalized working relationship. My focus is on long-term professional partnerships rather than rotating agency placements.
-
I have worked in over a dozen facilities across multiple states, adapting quickly to different OR teams, workflows, and surgeon preferences. My background emphasizes reliability, efficiency, and seamless integration into existing surgical teams.

With Medely, you are booking through a marketplace, which means a rotating pool of assistants, added platform fees, and limited continuity from day to day. With me, you work directly with the Surgical Assistant who will be in your operating room. There are no middlemen, and no marketplace markups. You know exactly who you are getting every time, your preferences are learned and remembered. Coverage is built on a professional relationship rather than an app-based match.
